Snap Map Takeover
Throughout the 21st century, social media
has continued to grow at an excelling pace.
New social platforms are popping up constantly and new updates are being
done to the already existing platforms.
One social media platform that got an extreme and questionable update
would be Snapchat. Back in June 2017,
Snapchat created “Snap Map” which shares the location of whomever is using the
app with their friends on the application (Vomiero & Mark Do, 2017). This ultimately effects the socio technical
affordances as now the users of Snapchat can interact in a completely new
way. The socio technical affordance can
be summed up as the interactions that “involve individuals interacting with (a) technologies,
and (b) other individuals” (Vatrapu, p.1).
Thus, with this new way to view people’s locations, the users of
snapchat are using this new technology to view other locations for a multitude
of reasons both positive and negative.
Thus, with this new direction of technology that is taking place, it is
questioned on how this will affect relationships of people as the
socio-technical affordances make it clear to see that the use of this new Snap
Map gives more power to its users than ever before.
