Filters: Connectivity and Sharing

Filters also allow us to share our location with others. This can be done by applying filters with your geographic location on it. This lets your followers know where you are in the world. The new normal way to communicate is with a few words (Sashittal et all, 2016, p. 196). This can be seen in birthday filters. Snapchat has different ways you can connect with your friends on their birthdays. Applying a filter for your friends birthday is a great way to interact with them online. This lets them know you have put in some extra effort to make their snapchat special. You can buy filters for your friends where you can write special messages for them. Geofilters which are filters you can create yourself cost $5 for every 20,000 square feet (Weinreb, 2018). This is quite a reasonable price considering you can get a variety of locations that can create a bigger audience. This means anyone has access to create their own filters and share them with others. A lot of people use this type of filter for special events. It makes the snapchat more personalized. It also allows you to share the event on a larger scale as anyone in the area can access the filter and use it.

Many businesses use snapchat filters in order to promote their products. This can be connected to the concept of “sharing and mystification” (John 64). This is where companies on social media sites exploit us by using their power in order to use us as a source of free labour. We use these filters often times without thinking that we are promoting products for companies and benefiting them. These companies make the filter unique so that individuals have the urge to want to try it out and send it to their friends. In the article by Lauren Johnson, it stated that Snapchat has the most interactions created between friends. It also said that “more than 3 billion filtered snaps are viewed everyday” (ADWEEK, Johnson, 2017). This shows that using branded filters is something that will work for companies as if the filter is successful and people like it, it will be used in a great amount of interactions between individuals. This will allow the products to be shared with a wider audience. Companies that are promoting their products can purchase sponsored animated filters that can takeover a variety of different places like the US, Canada, the Uk, Germany, France and Australia (ADWEEK, Johnson, 2017). This allows for products to be advertised on a much larger scale.
